It all began as a hobby. . .

In 1981 Susie Stoltzfus, having recently moved from Pennsylvania to New York, began to make quilts and show them at local quilt shows.  With the encouragement of new friends, Susie first opened The Quilt Room in an upstairs bedroom of the Stoltzfus family farm house.  People began to come from all over to see the various handmade quilts stacked high on a double bed.

Today, The Quilt Room is owned and operated by Susie's daughter and son-in-law, Naomi and Glenn Lapp.  The quilts are still stacked high on a double bed; however with an inventory of more than 75 quilts, the majority are now displayed on wooden racks. Many new items and fabrics have been added to The Quilt Room's inventory.  Our shop is nestled in a white pine grove about six miles south of Penn Yan, Naomi and Glenn continue the family traditions that have been handed down for generations.  Naomi continues to practice the art of quiltmaking, a tradition that has been passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter.  Glenn is honing a skill that has interested him since childhood- woodworking.  Together, the Lapps run a business that features the fruits of their creative endeavors.

We do alot of custom quilts which are made to the requested size, color and pattern that the buyer chooses.  There is an approximate wait period of 6 months for custom orders.  Prices depend upon the size and pattern of the quilt but range from $595 to $1295.  Along with sewing custom quilts, we also repair quilts.

The Quilt Room now ships quilts all over the world and takes wares to craft shows throughout New York state.  We also have a booth at The Windmill Farm and Craft market, which is located just one-half mile from the shop.
